Sanding a setting compound fill coat before it cures produces a rough, weak surface that the next coat will not adhere to correctly. Coat 2: All-Purpose Compound — The Block Coat The second coat uses all-purpose joint compound — an air-dry product that is more workable and easier to feather than setting compound. The block coat serves two purposes: it levels any minor high spots or low spots left by the fill coat, and it begins the feathering process that blends the repair into the surrounding wall. Feathering at this stage extends 4–6 inches beyond the edges of the fill coat. The compound is applied thinner and thinner as it approaches the edge, creating a gradual transition from the repair to the original wall surface. The edge of a properly applied block coat should be virtually imperceptible to the touch. The block coat must cure completely before the next coat — typically 4–8 hours in DFW conditions, longer in summer humidity. Its job is final blending: extending the transition zone another 4–6 inches beyond the block coat edge, filling any tool marks left by the previous coats, and creating the smooth, even surface that texture and paint will be applied to. The finish coat is feathered 8–12 inches (or more on larger repairs) from the center of the repair. The edges are so thin they are nearly invisible to the eye before sanding. After a full cure and light sanding with appropriate grit sandpaper, the transition from repair to original wall should be undetectable by touch.
